What should you know about embedded whiteheads?

A whitehead forms when oil and shed skin cells block a hair follicle while the opening remains closed. The bump may feel firm or uneven and may not look inflamed. Several small, uniform bumps can fit with comedonal acne, while a hard, pearly bump that does not behave like a pore may be milia. Whiteheads are a feature that can occur with acne; they do not by themselves show how severe acne is.

Avoid treating every tiny facial bump as the same problem. Scrubbing, picking, or repeatedly pressing the area can irritate the skin and leave marks.

Wash with a mild cleanser, use non-comedogenic moisturiser, and remove makeup before sleep. Introduce one acne active at a time. A topical retinoid can help keep follicles clear, but it may cause dryness or irritation at first and needs careful use around the eyes and lips. A clinician can advise whether it suits you, particularly during pregnancy or if your skin is reactive. Professional extraction may be considered for selected lesions; do not attempt to dig out a deep bump at home.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if bumps are painful, rapidly changing, spreading, repeatedly inflamed, or leaving scars or dark marks. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, warmth, pus, fever, or eye-area involvement. An assessment can distinguish acne from milia or another skin condition and match treatment to your skin.
