What should you know about electrodermal testing for food allergies?

Short answer

Electrodermal testing cannot reliably diagnose food allergy; a clinician should match your symptoms to validated testing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a food result means

During electrodermal testing, a device records a skin-resistance reading while substances may be held or placed near an electrode. A result labelled positive does not show the immune response involved in food allergy. It cannot establish that a food caused your symptoms, predict reaction severity, or safely identify foods to eat.

Assessment usually considers what was eaten, how much, the time to symptoms, the symptoms themselves and whether the reaction recurred. Skin-prick testing or a food-specific IgE blood test may be considered. An oral food challenge, when needed, is performed under appropriate medical supervision.

What to do next

Keep eating a varied diet unless a qualified clinician has advised a specific avoidance plan. Removing many foods after an electrodermal report can cause nutritional gaps and may hide the pattern your clinician needs. Record ingredients, timing, exercise, medicines and symptoms after suspected exposures.

Take the report to a GP or allergy specialist and ask whether validated testing is appropriate. Never challenge a food at home to check a result if you previously developed breathing symptoms, swelling, faintness or widespread hives.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, collapse, or rapidly spreading hives after eating. These symptoms can indicate anaphylaxis. Less severe recurring symptoms still deserve review because food reactions can overlap with digestive or allergic conditions, including allergic rhinitis or asthma.

Questions to take along

Could my symptoms be allergy, intolerance or another condition? Which validated test fits my history? Do I need a dietitian before avoiding a food? What should I do if an exposure causes swelling or breathing trouble?

Questions people ask

Can this test tell me which foods are safe?

No. A device reading cannot establish food safety. Discuss suspected foods with a clinician before making major dietary changes.

What is a supervised food challenge?

It is a planned assessment in which measured food exposure is monitored by trained healthcare professionals when appropriate.
