Short answer

If pregnancy occurs while using birth control, an ectopic pregnancy remains possible and needs prompt assessment when pain or bleeding develops.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How contraception fits in

Contraception lowers the chance of pregnancy, but no method prevents every pregnancy. If a pregnancy happens, its location still needs to be established. An ectopic pregnancy is outside the uterus, commonly in a fallopian tube. Using birth control does not explain away one-sided pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, or faintness.

Some methods can change bleeding patterns, which may make pregnancy harder to recognise. A missed period is not required for concern. Pelvic inflammatory disease or earlier problems involving a fallopian tube can also affect risk, but an ectopic pregnancy may occur without a known risk factor.

Practical next steps

Take a pregnancy test if you have pregnancy symptoms, a late or unusual period, or new pelvic pain despite contraception. Contact a clinician promptly if the result is positive, especially with pain or bleeding. Bring the name of your contraceptive method, details of missed or late doses, and the date symptoms began. A transvaginal ultrasound and blood tests may be used.

Warning signs

Go to emergency care for severe or rapidly increasing pelvic or abdominal pain, dizziness, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, or heavy bleeding. Internal bleeding can occur even when contraception was used and requires immediate treatment. If you feel weak or faint, avoid travelling alone.

Useful questions

Ask whether your test results show a pregnancy and whether its location is visible. Discuss whether your contraceptive should be paused, changed, or continued while you are assessed. If treatment is needed, ask about medication, surgery, including salpingectomy, and follow-up.

Questions people ask

Should I take a pregnancy test while using birth control?

Yes, if you have pregnancy symptoms, an unusual period, or pelvic pain; contraception does not make a test unnecessary.

Does birth control cause an ectopic pregnancy?

Birth control does not cause every ectopic pregnancy. The key concern is assessing the location if pregnancy occurs.
