Can you still have a period with an ectopic pregnancy?

A true menstrual period follows the shedding of the uterine lining when pregnancy has not implanted. In an ectopic pregnancy, pregnancy tissue is present, but it is outside the uterus. Hormonal changes can still affect the uterine lining, causing spotting or bleeding that may be mistaken for a period. The amount and timing do not reliably show where the pregnancy is located. Ectopic pregnancy can present with bleeding, and pelvic pain may develop at the same time or later. A pelvic pain symptom does not by itself identify the cause.

If you have a positive pregnancy test or pregnancy is possible, arrange prompt clinical advice even when bleeding seems familiar. A clinician may use serial pregnancy hormone tests and a Transvaginal Ultrasound to check whether the pregnancy is developing in the uterus. Mention any history of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, previous ectopic pregnancy or tubal surgery. Do not use the bleeding pattern to decide that assessment is unnecessary.

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department for sharp or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, severe dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, unusual pallor, breathlessness or heavy bleeding. Internal bleeding can become serious quickly, and symptoms matter more than whether the bleeding resembles your usual cycle.

Ask how your symptoms fit with the test results, whether another blood test or scan is needed, what follow-up will involve, and what you should do if pain or bleeding changes.
