Can an ectopic pregnancy result in a normal delivery?

In a healthy pregnancy, the embryo grows inside the uterus. With an ectopic pregnancy, it most often settles in a fallopian tube, although implantation can occur elsewhere. The tissue cannot move safely into the uterus, and continued growth can damage the surrounding area. A positive pregnancy test does not show where the pregnancy is located. A clinician uses symptoms, blood tests, and imaging such as a transvaginal ultrasound to assess the location and development.

Contact an obstetric or gynaecology service promptly if an ectopic pregnancy is possible. Assessment may include repeat pregnancy-hormone testing and an ultrasound when the timing is suitable. Treatment depends on the pregnancy location, symptoms, examination findings, and whether there is internal bleeding. Options may include medicine or surgery; a salpingectomy removes an affected fallopian tube when surgery is needed. Follow-up confirms that treatment is complete.

Go to an emergency department for sudden or worsening abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked weakness, heavy vaginal bleeding, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding. Do not wait for pain to become constant, and do not drive yourself if you feel faint.
