Is headache a sign of ectopic pregnancy?

Headache can happen for many reasons, including hormonal changes, dehydration, poor sleep, stress or a migraine. It does not show where a pregnancy has implanted. Ectopic pregnancy more often raises concern through lower abdominal or pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, dizziness or faintness after a missed period or positive pregnancy test. Pelvic pain can have causes other than ectopic pregnancy, so the symptom should be assessed rather than used to make a diagnosis at home.

If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test and arrange medical advice for new pelvic pain or bleeding, even if a headache is also present. A clinician may check hormone levels and arrange a Transvaginal Ultrasound. Tell them about the headache, its onset, vision changes, medicines and any pregnancy history. Avoid taking new medicines without checking their suitability in pregnancy.

Seek emergency help for severe or sudden pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, fainting, severe weakness, confusion, or a sudden severe headache with neurological symptoms. These symptoms need prompt examination because serious bleeding or another urgent condition may be present.

Ask whether the headache needs separate evaluation, how pregnancy location will be checked, when results will be repeated, and which pain-relief options are suitable if pregnancy is possible.
