What should you know about ECF chemotherapy?

ECF uses three medicines: epirubicin, cisplatin and fluorouracil. Epirubicin and cisplatin are commonly given into a vein, while fluorouracil may be delivered through a pump or infusion depending on the treatment plan. The regimen can be used for selected cancers, but the reason for choosing it differs between patients.

Before and during treatment, clinicians may check blood counts, kidney function, hearing, heart health and symptoms. Nausea, mouth soreness, tiredness, appetite changes, hair loss and increased infection risk are possible; tell the team early because supportive medicines and adjustments can help.

Bring an up-to-date medicine list and tell the team about kidney problems, hearing changes, heart conditions, previous chemotherapy, pregnancy or plans for fertility. Take prescribed anti-sickness medicines as directed, drink fluids according to your team's advice and protect your mouth with gentle dental care.

Ask how to care for an infusion pump or central line, who to call outside clinic hours and which foods or activities should be avoided. Arrange transport if treatment makes you tired, and keep appointments for blood tests so the next dose can be given safely.

Call your cancer team urgently for a fever, shaking chills, sore throat, unusual bleeding, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, reduced urine, ringing in the ears or new breathlessness. Get emergency help for collapse, chest pain, severe allergic symptoms or confusion. A leaking, painful or red central line also needs prompt assessment.
