Early signs of ectopic pregnancy at 4 weeks

An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the main cavity of the uterus, often in a fallopian tube. Pain may be low in the abdomen or pelvis and can feel stronger on one side. Light bleeding can be mistaken for a period, and some people initially have no warning symptoms. Pelvic inflammatory disease is one factor that can affect the fallopian tubes, but many possible causes of pain and bleeding are not ectopic pregnancy. A symptom cannot confirm the diagnosis; clinicians use pregnancy hormone testing, examination and ultrasound.

Call emergency services for severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, collapse, shoulder-tip pain with weakness, heavy bleeding, or unusual breathlessness. These can signal internal bleeding and need immediate treatment. Possible treatments depend on the scan, symptoms and test results; they may include medicine or surgery such as salpingectomy.
