What should you know about early changes of adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis develops in the muscle of the uterine wall. Early changes may be subtle: cramps become stronger, bleeding becomes heavier or lasts longer, or pelvic pain appears outside the period. Some people feel pressure or tenderness, while others have no symptoms.

These features can also occur with fibroids, endometriosis, infection, or other causes of heavy or painful periods. A symptom pattern cannot confirm adenomyosis. A clinician may combine your history and examination with pelvic imaging to decide whether further assessment is needed.

Track each cycle, including the start date, bleeding changes, clots, pain location, and whether pain affects sleep or activities. Book a review when symptoms persist, worsen, or differ clearly from your normal pattern. Mention pregnancy plans, contraception, and any previous uterine procedures.

Treatment depends on the impact of symptoms and your plans. A hormonal coil may reduce bleeding for some people. Uterine artery embolisation, endometrial ablation, or hysterectomy may be considered in selected situations, with different implications for fertility and future periods.

Get urgent care for severe or sudden pelvic pain, very heavy bleeding, fainting, fever, or new pain and bleeding when pregnancy is possible. These symptoms can point to a problem needing immediate treatment and should not be attributed to adenomyosis without assessment.
