What should you know about dual-energy chest X-ray?

Short answer

A dual-energy chest X-ray uses two X-ray energy levels to separate overlapping materials and clarify findings in the chest.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
It separates overlapping chest materials on paired images.
Your role
Keep still and follow breath-holding instructions.

What the test shows

The technique creates paired images that help distinguish features such as soft tissue, bone and calcium that may overlap on a conventional image. It can support assessment of lung or chest findings, but it is still an imaging test rather than a diagnosis by itself. The radiologist interprets the images alongside your symptoms, examination and earlier scans. Possible questions may involve pneumonia, bronchiectasis, chronic cough or tuberculosis, each of which needs clinical context.

Before and after the scan

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, and mention metal items or medical devices that could affect positioning. Wear comfortable clothing and follow the centre’s instructions about jewellery or changing clothes. During the scan you may need to stand or sit still and briefly hold your breath while images are taken. The examination itself does not treat the cause of a cough. Your clinician may arrange a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) or compare it with a standard [Chest X-Ray](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/chest-x-ray/).

When to seek care

Do not wait for an imaging appointment if you have severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, confusion or coughing up a large amount of blood. Seek prompt clinical advice for a persistent or worsening cough, high fever, night sweats or unexplained weight loss. A scan result that mentions an abnormality needs follow-up with the requesting clinician; it does not by itself confirm [Pneumonia](/conditions/pneumonia/) or [Tuberculosis](/conditions/tuberculosis/).

Questions for your doctor

Ask why dual-energy imaging was chosen, what finding is being investigated, when the report will be ready, and whether further imaging or [Tuberculosis Screening](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/tuberculosis-screening/) is needed.

Questions people ask

Is a dual-energy chest X-ray the same as a CT scan?

No. It is an X-ray examination that uses two energy levels; CT creates cross-sectional images using a different technique.

Does an abnormal image prove cancer or infection?

No. Imaging findings need interpretation with symptoms, examination and sometimes additional tests.
