Dog seasonal allergies: treatment

A clinician considers whether symptoms follow dog contact, outdoor pollen, or both. Sneezing and nasal blockage may fit Allergic Rhinitis, while itchy watery eyes can occur with Allergic Conjunctivitis. Wheeze, breathlessness or night cough need separate attention because Asthma can require a different treatment plan.

Reducing exposure is usually part of care: keep the dog away from sleeping areas, wash hands after contact, clean fabrics and remove pollen from the coat after walks. Depending on the symptoms, a clinician may discuss an antihistamine, a nasal spray or eye treatment. Use products exactly as directed, check for interactions and ask before treating a child, pregnancy or a long-term condition. Do not share prescribed medicine.

Book a review when symptoms persist despite the agreed plan, return frequently, affect sleep or interfere with work and school. Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, sudden facial or tongue swelling, collapse or confusion. A cough lasting weeks also warrants assessment; Chronic Cough may have causes beyond allergy.

Ask which trigger is most plausible, how long to try each treatment, what side effects to watch for, and whether testing or inhaler assessment is needed. Bring a list of medicines and a symptom diary showing dog contact, outdoor exposure and response.
