Dog seasonal allergies: home remedies

Seasonal allergy symptoms may follow contact with a dog carrying pollen on its coat, while sensitivity to dander can occur throughout the year. Sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, watery eyes, throat irritation and cough are common patterns. Symptoms can overlap with Allergic Rhinitis and Allergic Conjunctivitis; the pattern alone cannot confirm the trigger.

Keep the dog out of the bedroom and wash hands after touching it. Wipe the coat with a damp cloth after outdoor walks, wash bedding regularly, and use a vacuum with effective filtration if available. Keep windows closed when outdoor pollen is high and change clothes after gardening or walking. Do not give a dog or a child human allergy medicine unless a clinician or veterinarian has advised the exact product and dose.

Arrange a medical review if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, limit activity or do not improve with exposure changes. Seek urgent help for difficult breathing, chest tightness, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness or rapidly worsening symptoms. A cough or wheeze may need assessment for Asthma rather than being attributed to allergy alone.

Ask whether the symptoms fit an allergy, infection or another cause; which medicines are suitable for your age and health; and whether testing or an asthma assessment is appropriate. Take a note of timing, outdoor exposure, contact with the dog and any response to home measures.
