Dog allergy tests for humans: what to know

Dog allergy symptoms may follow contact with dander, saliva, urine or particles carried on a dog's coat. A clinician will ask when symptoms begin, where they occur, and whether they include sneezing, itchy eyes, blocked nose, hives, wheezing or cough. A skin-prick test places tiny amounts of selected allergens on the skin; an allergy blood test measures immune antibodies to particular allergens. A positive result shows sensitisation, but it does not by itself prove that every exposure causes symptoms. A negative result also needs to be considered alongside your history. Some reactions blamed on dogs may relate to dust, pollen or other animals in the same environment. Testing can help distinguish these possibilities and guide a practical plan. Keep a brief symptom record: note contact with the dog, the delay before symptoms, the rooms involved, and what improved them. Bring a list of medicines and describe any previous severe reaction. Do not stop prescribed treatment unless the clinician who arranged testing tells you to; some medicines can affect skin-test results, while blood testing may be chosen when skin testing is unsuitable. Reducing exposure can include keeping the dog out of the bedroom, washing hands after contact, and improving ventilation, but these measures should complement medical advice.
