Does sinusitis cause cough?

Inflammation can increase mucus in the nose and sinuses. Rather than draining forward, mucus may run down the back of the throat, a process called post-nasal drainage. This can produce a tickle, throat clearing, or a cough that is worse when lying down or waking up. A blocked nose may also encourage mouth breathing, which can dry and irritate the throat.

Cough has many possible causes, including a viral infection, asthma, reflux, allergy, or medicines. The duration and character of the cough, along with fever, breathing symptoms, and nasal complaints, help guide assessment.

Drink fluids, rest, and consider saline nasal spray to help clear thick mucus. Raising the head slightly while sleeping may reduce throat drainage. Avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and other irritants. A pharmacist can advise about suitable treatments, but check before using a decongestant or cough medicine if you have long-term conditions, are pregnant, or take regular medicines.

Arrange a medical review if the cough persists, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or is accompanied by ongoing facial pain or fever. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, or sudden severe worsening. These warning signs can point to a problem outside the sinuses.
