Short answer

Dizziness with sweating and shaking can happen with low blood sugar, anxiety, heat, thyroid overactivity or alcohol withdrawal.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Safety
Sit down and do not drive during an episode.
Key clue
Record the relationship to meals, medicines, heat, caffeine and alcohol.

Possible causes

Hypoglycaemia may cause tremor, sweating, dizziness, hunger, irritability or confusion, especially in someone using diabetes medicine or after missed food. A surge of stress can create similar sensations; Generalised Anxiety Disorder may bring repeated episodes with racing thoughts or rapid breathing. Hyperthyroidism can cause ongoing shakiness, heat intolerance, palpitations and weight change. Alcohol Use Disorder may be associated with shaking and sweating when alcohol intake is reduced or stopped, which can become dangerous. A Tremor can also occur without these triggers and may need assessment.

One episode cannot establish the cause. Timing, food, medicines, caffeine, alcohol, heat and emotional stress are useful details.

What to do during an episode

Sit or lie down, move away from heat, and do not drive. If you have diabetes, follow your personal low-blood-sugar plan and recheck as instructed. Do not abruptly stop heavy alcohol use without medical advice. Keep a symptom record and arrange review if episodes recur or are becoming stronger.

When to seek urgent help

Get emergency help for confusion, seizure, collapse, severe agitation, chest pain, trouble breathing, a very fast heartbeat or symptoms after stopping heavy alcohol use. Prompt assessment is also needed if symptoms persist despite food and rest or occur without an obvious trigger.

Questions for your doctor

Could this relate to blood sugar, thyroid function, anxiety, medicines or alcohol withdrawal? What should I do at the first sign, and which symptoms mean emergency care? Would a symptom and food log help?

Questions people ask

Can low blood sugar cause shaking and sweating?

Yes. Low blood sugar can trigger shaking, sweating and dizziness, with confusion as a more serious warning sign.

Should alcohol be stopped suddenly if shaking starts?

If heavy drinking is involved, seek medical advice because withdrawal can become dangerous and may need supervised care.
