What should you know about diverticulitis and bladder infection?

Diverticulitis affects inflamed pouches in the bowel and may cause steady abdominal pain, fever, nausea, constipation, or diarrhoea. A bladder infection affects the urinary tract and may cause burning when passing urine, frequent urges, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or discomfort low in the abdomen.

Because the bowel and bladder sit close together, inflammation in one area can create pressure or urinary symptoms that resemble the other condition. A urine sample, abdominal examination, and sometimes further tests help separate these possibilities. In men, prostate inflammation can also produce urinary discomfort.

Arrange medical assessment if urinary symptoms occur with abdominal pain, fever, or a change in bowel habit. Drink fluids if you can and follow the prescribed treatment once the cause is identified. Do not use leftover antibiotics or assume one antibiotic treats every source of infection.

Tell the clinician about pregnancy, kidney problems, prostate symptoms, recent antibiotics, and medicine allergies. Ask whether you need a repeat urine sample or review if symptoms do not settle. Vomiting or poor fluid intake can lead to Dehydration and may change the urgency of care.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal or back pain, high fever, chills, repeated vomiting, confusion, faintness, or very little urine. These signs can occur with a Kidney Infection or a more serious infection. Rapid deterioration, extreme weakness, or breathing difficulty may indicate Sepsis and needs emergency help.

Ask whether your symptoms point more towards the bowel or urinary tract, whether urine culture is needed, and what improvement should look like. Ask when to return if pain, fever, urinary difficulty, or bowel symptoms continue.
