What should you know about dilated pupils light sensitivity?

Pupils may widen in dim surroundings, after prescribed eye drops, with some medicines or recreational substances, or during certain neurological and eye problems. Light sensitivity can occur with migraine or conjunctivitis, but the combination of a new unequal pupil, eye pain, blurred vision or a severe headache needs careful examination. Clinicians consider whether one or both pupils are enlarged, how they react to light, and whether there has been an injury or medication exposure.

Move to a dim environment, wear sunglasses outdoors, and avoid driving if glare or blurred vision affects your safety. Do not use someone else’s eye drops or place chemicals near the eye. Keep a list or photograph of recent medicines and note when the pupil change began. If eye drops were used for an examination, ask the clinic how long blurred vision or light sensitivity may last and when to call back.

Seek emergency help for sudden pupil enlargement with severe headache, confusion, weakness, vomiting, loss of vision, a painful red eye, or after a head injury. Urgent assessment is also needed for a new difference between pupil sizes, especially with double vision, drooping eyelid or neck pain. Contact an eye clinician promptly when sensitivity persists, worsens or is accompanied by eye discharge or significant pain.
