Is Dettol suitable for scalp folliculitis?

Folliculitis is inflammation around hair follicles. On the scalp it may look like small pimples, tender bumps, crusts or itchy spots. Triggers can include bacteria, yeast, friction, occlusive hair products, shaving or ingrown hairs, so the same-looking rash may need different care.

Dettol is a household antiseptic, not a universal folliculitis treatment. Applying it can sting, dry the scalp or cause irritant dermatitis, making redness and itching harder to interpret. Scratching and picking can injure follicles and increase the chance of scarring.

Stop applying Dettol to the scalp and rinse away residue with gentle water if the skin is irritated. Avoid picking, tight headwear, close shaving and heavy products that sit on the scalp. Use clean pillowcases, do not share brushes or clippers, and clean tools between uses.

A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy when a bacterial cause fits, while antibiotics for skin infection may be considered for more extensive or persistent disease. Other causes may need a different approach, so do not use leftover antibiotics or steroid mixtures without advice.

Seek prompt assessment for rapidly spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe pain, pus, fever, swollen glands, or areas of broken skin. Arrange review for recurrent bumps, patchy hair loss, thick crusting, scarring or symptoms that persist despite gentle care.
