What should you know about Hibiclens for scalp folliculitis?

Scalp folliculitis is inflammation around hair follicles that may involve bacteria, yeast, friction, occlusion or another skin condition. An antiseptic wash cannot address every cause. It may also cause dryness, burning, redness or an irritant rash, especially on already inflamed skin.

Keep chlorhexidine away from the eyes, ears, mouth and other sensitive areas. It should not be used on deep wounds or swallowed. It is different from a prescribed topical or oral antibiotic, which is selected for a particular infection after examination.

If a clinician advises Hibiclens, follow the product directions and their specific contact-time instructions. Rinse thoroughly, stop if marked irritation develops, and do not combine it with other medicated products unless advised. Use a clean towel, avoid scratching or squeezing bumps, and pause tight headwear or oily hair products that worsen occlusion. A clinician may instead recommend a targeted shampoo, topical antibiotic therapy or antibiotic therapy for skin infection.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if scalp bumps recur, spread, itch intensely, form crusts, drain pus or cause patchy hair loss. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, facial swelling or eye symptoms. Persistent bumps may be folliculitis, ingrown hairs, acne-like pimples or another disorder.

Ask what is driving the follicle inflammation, whether chlorhexidine is appropriate for your scalp, what areas to avoid, and when a different treatment or swab is needed.
