What should you know about demodex hair loss treatment?

Mites associated with follicles may contribute to itch, redness, scaling, or follicular inflammation in some people. That irritation can make the scalp uncomfortable and may lead to scratching or breakage, but hair loss has many other explanations. Patchy loss can occur with alopecia areata or scalp ringworm; patterned thinning can reflect male or female pattern hair loss; diffuse shedding can follow a body stressor; and tight hairstyles can cause traction alopecia.

A clinician may inspect the scalp and hair shafts, ask when shedding began, and check for scale, broken hairs, smooth patches, or scarring. Testing is guided by the examination rather than by hair shedding alone.

Use a mild shampoo, avoid scratching and tight hairstyles, and do not use pet products or unprescribed insect treatments on the scalp. A dermatologist may treat confirmed inflammation or another diagnosis with a targeted medicine. Keep a simple record of shedding, itch, scaling, and areas of thinning so changes are easier to assess. Hair-growth medicines should not be started as a substitute for finding the cause.

Book an assessment when shedding persists, forms patches, or comes with scale, tenderness, pustules, or intense itch. Seek prompt care for rapidly expanding loss, painful swelling, drainage, fever, or shiny areas where follicles appear absent, because active infection or scarring may need timely treatment.

Ask what pattern of loss is present, whether the scalp needs testing, how Demodex was assessed, which treatment is appropriate, and when regrowth or reduced shedding should be reviewed.
