Short answer

Dark-looking eyes with pale skin can have harmless causes, but persistent pallor may need a blood count and medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Look for
Pallor may show in lips, gums, palms or inner eyelids.
Useful test
A full blood count can check for anaemia.

What may be behind the change

The skin beneath the eyes is thin, so shadows, allergies, poor sleep, sun exposure and natural pigmentation can make it look darker. Pale skin may be easier to notice in the lips, gums, palms or inside the eyelids. Reduced red blood cells or haemoglobin can cause pallor with tiredness, breathlessness, dizziness, headaches, palpitations or feeling cold. [Anaemia](/conditions/anaemia/) has several causes; [Iron Deficiency Anaemia](/conditions/iron-deficiency-anaemia/) and vitamin B12 deficiency are examples. Dark eyes alone do not establish anaemia.

What to do next

Consider whether the appearance is new, whether sleep or allergies have changed, and whether you have heavy periods, dietary restrictions, digestive symptoms or another source of blood loss. Eat a varied diet and avoid starting iron tablets solely from appearance. A clinician may examine your skin and eyes and arrange a full blood count, iron studies or vitamin testing. [Pale Skin](/symptoms/pale-skin/) explains the symptom in more detail.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue lips, a racing heartbeat with weakness or active heavy bleeding. Arrange medical review if pallor persists, worsens, or comes with reduced exercise tolerance, unexplained weight change, numbness or yellowing. Conditions such as [Sickle Cell Disease](/conditions/sickle-cell-disease/) and [Thalassaemia](/conditions/thalassaemia/) require specialist care when relevant to your history.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Is the paleness visible in more than one area? Could anaemia, nutrition, bleeding or another condition explain it? Which blood tests are appropriate? Should I use [Iron Supplementation](/treatments/medical-management/iron-supplementation/)?

Questions people ask

Do dark circles under the eyes mean anaemia?

Not by themselves. Shadows, allergies, sleep and pigmentation are common explanations; other symptoms may justify testing.

Can pale skin improve with iron supplements?

Only when iron deficiency is the cause. Testing and clinical advice should guide supplementation.
