What should you know about croup cough in adults?

Croup describes irritation and swelling around the voice box and upper windpipe. It often produces a barking sound, a hoarse voice, or a rough cough that may be louder at night. In adults, similar sounds can occur with a viral illness, throat or airway irritation, asthma, reflux, or another upper-airway problem. A cough sound alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the noise occurs only during coughing or also while breathing in. Record when it began, whether you have fever or voice change, and whether swallowing or lying down makes it worse. This information helps a clinician distinguish a croup-like cough from conditions such as acute bronchitis, asthma, or a common cold.

Sit upright, rest your voice, and take small drinks if swallowing is comfortable. Avoid smoke, vaping, and other airway irritants. Keep track of breathing, voice changes, fever, and the pattern of the cough. Do not use someone else’s inhaler or leftover antibiotics. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a suitable symptom medicine is appropriate for you, especially if you take regular medicines or have asthma.

Seek emergency help immediately for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, faintness, inability to speak in full sentences, drooling, or difficulty swallowing. Urgent assessment is also needed for noisy breathing while resting, rapidly worsening symptoms, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. Arrange a prompt medical review if the cough persists, repeatedly returns, or follows choking, an allergic exposure, or an injury.

Ask: Could this be upper-airway swelling, asthma, reflux, or an infection? Do I need an examination of my throat and breathing? Which warning signs should make me seek emergency help? Are any of my medicines or exposures irritating my airway?
