Short answer

A COVID-19 rapid test can provide a quick indication of infection, but a negative result does not always exclude it; interpret the result with symptoms and clinical advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How rapid tests work

A rapid test usually looks for material from SARS-CoV-2 in a sample collected from the nose or mouth, depending on the kit. The result is useful only when the instructions are followed, the sample is collected properly, and the test is read within the stated window.

A positive result should be treated as likely infection. A negative result means the test did not detect the target at that moment; it may not rule out early infection, a poorly collected sample, or infection when symptoms continue. Fever, cough, fatigue, headache, and feeling generally unwell should be considered alongside the result.

What to do with the result

Check the expiry date, read the instructions fully, and record the result and time. After a positive result, follow local guidance about staying away from others and contact a clinician if you need treatment advice. After a negative result, continue precautions and seek guidance if symptoms persist or worsen.

Do not share test components, reuse a swab, or interpret an unclear result as negative. Ask the testing service whether a different test or clinical assessment is needed, especially before contact with someone vulnerable.

When to seek care

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, inability to stay awake, or sudden chest pressure. Seek prompt medical advice for worsening cough, persistent fever, inability to drink, or increasing weakness. Urgent symptoms require assessment even when a rapid test is negative.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms and timing call for another test, how to protect household members, and whether you qualify for early treatment. Confirm what an unclear test line means for the specific kit you used.
