Coughing Up Pink Blood: What to Know

Pink colouring can occur when a small amount of blood mixes with mucus or watery fluid. Forceful coughing may irritate airway lining, while Pneumonia can cause inflamed airways and discoloured sputum. Bronchiectasis may lead to recurrent blood-stained mucus. Pulmonary Embolism, Tuberculosis, and Lung Cancer are other possible causes that require assessment; the colour does not identify which condition is present.

Contact a clinician promptly and explain whether the material is foamy, watery, streaked, or mostly blood. Record when it began, how often it appears, and any fever, cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, leg swelling, night sweats, or weight change. Mention smoking, recent travel or immobility, and medicines that affect clotting. Avoid smoking and strenuous activity until you have advice.

Call emergency services for worsening or substantial bleeding, sudden breathlessness, sharp chest pain, faintness, confusion, blue lips, or a racing heartbeat. Urgent help is also needed if symptoms follow prolonged immobility, surgery, or a recent serious illness. Sit upright, keep a phone nearby, and do not drive yourself if you are breathless or light-headed.

Ask whether the colour suggests airway irritation, infection, or fluid mixed with blood; whether you need examination, imaging, or other tests; and how your medicines affect bleeding.
