Coughing Up Mucus With a Small Amount of Blood

Hard coughing can irritate delicate airway lining and leave fine red streaks. A chest infection such as Pneumonia may produce mucus and inflamed tissue. Repeated episodes can occur with Bronchiectasis. A pulmonary clot, Tuberculosis, or Lung Cancer are other possible causes that require clinical evaluation; having this symptom does not by itself identify any one of them.

Contact a healthcare professional for advice, particularly if you have never had this symptom before. Keep a simple record of the amount, colour, timing, and accompanying cough. Mention fever, wheezing, breathlessness, chest pain, recent travel, smoking, injury, and medicines such as anticoagulants. Drink fluids if you can do so safely, avoid smoking, and do not use someone else’s antibiotics.

Call emergency services if the bleeding becomes more than a small streak, continues, or returns with severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or blue-tinged lips. Get urgent advice if you feel suddenly unwell or have recently been immobile, had surgery, or developed one-sided leg swelling. Remain upright and avoid driving during severe symptoms.

Ask whether the blood may be coming from the nose, throat, or lungs; whether you need an examination, sputum testing, or imaging; and how to monitor the symptom. Ask which changes need emergency help and whether any current medicine could increase bleeding. If cancer-related bleeding is involved, ask whether Palliative Radiotherapy has a role.
