Coughing Up Mucus With Blood in It: What to Know

A small streak can follow forceful coughing or irritation in the nose, throat, or airways. Respiratory infections such as Pneumonia may inflame airway tissue. Longer-term airway widening, as in Bronchiectasis, can also cause repeated blood-stained mucus. Less common but serious causes include a clot in the lung, Tuberculosis, or Lung Cancer; the symptom alone cannot distinguish between these possibilities.

Arrange medical advice promptly and describe the colour, amount, frequency, and whether the blood is mixed through the mucus or appears on its surface. Note cough, fever, breathlessness, chest discomfort, night sweats, weight change, smoking history, recent travel, and medicines that affect clotting. Do not smoke, and do not start leftover antibiotics. A clinician may examine your chest and decide whether tests or imaging are needed.

Seek emergency help if bleeding is more than a few streaks, keeps increasing, or is accompanied by severe breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, blue lips, confusion, or a very fast heartbeat. Urgent assessment is also needed after a recent operation, prolonged immobility, or a known clotting problem. Sit upright while waiting for help and avoid driving if you feel weak or short of breath.

Ask what might be irritating or bleeding in the airway, whether you need a chest examination or imaging, how your medicines affect bleeding, and which changes should prompt emergency care. If a serious underlying condition is found, ask what treatment options are appropriate; Palliative Radiotherapy is one treatment used in some cancer-related situations.
