Coughing Up Bloody Boogers: What It Means

Dry air, a cold, allergies, nose picking, forceful blowing, or nasal sprays can irritate the delicate lining inside the nose. Dried mucus may then contain a small red or brown streak. Blood draining from the nose can mix with saliva and be mistaken for blood from the lungs. Blood that comes up after a deep chest cough and is mixed with sputum is different.

Chest causes include pneumonia or bronchiectasis; tuberculosis, pulmonary embolism, and lung cancer are also possibilities that a clinician may consider based on your symptoms and history. The presence of blood does not by itself identify a serious condition.

Avoid picking or forceful nose blowing, and use a gentle saline spray or humidified air if suitable. Note whether the blood is in nasal crusts, saliva, or chest phlegm. Seek medical advice if bleeding keeps returning, you take blood thinners, or you cannot tell where it starts. Do not put objects deep into the nose.

Get emergency help if bleeding is heavy or does not stop, or if you have shortness of breath, chest pain, faintness, confusion, or blue lips. A nosebleed that continues despite firm pressure needs urgent care. Blood coughed up from the chest, especially with sudden breathlessness, should be assessed urgently even when the amount looks small.

Ask whether the blood appears nasal or respiratory, whether your medicines or nasal treatments could contribute, and whether you need a chest examination. Mention cough, fever, night sweats, weight change, smoking, lung disease, recent travel, and exposure to tuberculosis.
