Coughing Up Blood With Mucus During Flu

A dry, forceful cough can irritate the lining of the throat and bronchial tubes. This may leave thin red lines in clear, white, or yellow mucus. Flu-like symptoms can also occur with pneumonia, which inflames the lungs and may cause fever, chest pain, breathlessness, and blood-stained sputum. Bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, a pulmonary embolism, and lung cancer are less common possibilities that require clinical context.

Mucus colour does not by itself show whether an infection needs antibiotics. Blood that is increasing, recurring, or mixed through a larger amount of sputum should not be attributed to flu without advice.

Contact a clinician if you cough up blood, particularly if fever or chest symptoms are present. Note the amount and appearance, how often it occurs, and whether the blood follows coughing. Drink fluids if suitable for you, rest, avoid smoke, and take only medicines recommended for your symptoms. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics.

Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, chest pain, faintness, confusion, blue lips, or heavy or ongoing bleeding. Sudden breathlessness with coughing blood needs immediate attention. Arrange prompt review if fever is worsening, you cannot keep fluids down, you are unusually drowsy, or the blood returns after seeming to stop.

Ask whether your symptoms fit a flu-like illness or pneumonia, whether your lungs need examination or imaging, and which medicines are safe with your existing treatment. Mention asthma or other lung disease, smoking, blood thinners, recent travel, and contact with tuberculosis.
