Constant post-nasal drip: what to know

Post-nasal drip is mucus moving from the nose or sinuses towards the throat. It can cause throat clearing, a cough, a tickling feeling, hoarseness, or a sensation of mucus stuck behind the nose. Allergic rhinitis may present with sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. Sinusitis may present with facial pressure, blocked nose, reduced smell, or discoloured discharge. Chronic sinusitis can cause symptoms that continue or return over time. Acid reflux may irritate the throat and feel similar to drainage, especially with a sour taste or symptoms after lying down. Chronic cough can be maintained by throat irritation.

Drink fluids regularly and consider a saline nasal spray or rinse using sterile or previously boiled and cooled water. Avoid smoke and identify triggers such as dust, pollen, pets, or strong fragrances. Keep the bedroom free of irritants and raise the head of the bed if reflux seems connected. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or nasal treatment is appropriate; use sprays as directed.

Arrange an appointment if drainage lasts, repeatedly returns, or causes persistent cough, voice change, facial pain, or poor sleep. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, heavy nosebleeding, severe headache with fever, or confusion.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, sinus disease, reflux, or another cause, and which nasal treatment or examination would be appropriate.
