The phrase is not usually a final diagnosis. It may refer to mucus, inflammation, fluid, or denser lung tissue seen on the image. A cough that persists can also need separate assessment. An X-ray cannot by itself identify every cause, and a clinician may compare it with older images or arrange another test.
