What should you know about cold pneumonia?

Cold pneumonia is an informal phrase rather than a separate diagnosis. Pneumonia is an infection or inflammation in the lung tissue, and it may begin with a cough, tiredness, fever or chills that resemble a cold. A cough may bring up phlegm, although this does not happen for everyone. Pneumonia can be caused by different germs, including viruses such as influenza or COVID-19. A clinician considers the whole pattern, including breathing, chest symptoms, temperature and general health.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid smoking or second-hand smoke. Monitor whether breathing becomes harder, activity becomes unusually difficult, or symptoms are steadily worsening. Do not start leftover antibiotics: they may not treat the cause and can delay the right assessment. A clinician may listen to your chest and decide whether testing or treatment is needed. If you have asthma, heart or lung disease, reduced immunity, are pregnant, or are caring for a young child or older adult, arrange advice sooner.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or difficulty staying awake. Prompt medical review is also sensible when a fever or cough is worsening, breathing is painful, or you are unable to keep fluids down. A serious infection can sometimes progress to sepsis, so rapidly deteriorating health should not be watched at home.
