Recovery after a cold knife cone biopsy

The procedure removes a cone-shaped piece of cervical tissue with a surgical blade. Recovery instructions vary with the amount removed, how bleeding was controlled, anaesthesia, and your health, so the discharge plan from the surgical team takes priority.

Period-like cramps can occur early in recovery. Light bleeding or a watery, brown, or dark discharge may appear as blood and material used to control bleeding leave the cervix. The pattern can change during healing, but it should not be accompanied by worsening pain, fever, or a foul smell.

The removed tissue is examined to identify the cell changes and whether they reach the specimen edges. That result guides follow-up; the appearance of discharge cannot show whether abnormal cells were fully removed.

Use sanitary pads so you can monitor bleeding. Take only pain relief recommended for you, and resume driving, work, exercise, and lifting according to the anaesthetic and surgical instructions. Rest if activity increases cramping or bleeding.

Avoid putting anything into the vagina until the clinician says healing is adequate. This usually includes tampons, menstrual cups, penetrative sex, and douching. Keep the pathology and follow-up appointments even if you feel well, because the next plan depends on the laboratory findings and cervical healing.

Contact the surgical team promptly for bleeding that is heavier than they told you to expect, clots, increasing pelvic pain, fever, chills, difficulty passing urine, or discharge with a strong unpleasant smell. Give them the procedure date, bleeding pattern, temperature if measured, and medicines taken.

Seek emergency care for bleeding that rapidly soaks through pads, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, chest pain, or severe abdominal pain. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or have recently taken sedating medicine.

Ask when the pathology result will be discussed, whether the specimen edges were clear of the targeted changes, when cervical screening or colposcopy is next due, and what future pregnancy considerations apply. Also confirm the exact date for returning to sex, tampons, swimming, exercise, work, and driving.
