Cold and shortness of breath: what should you know?

A viral illness can cause a blocked nose, coughing and inflamed breathing tubes, making breathing feel harder. Wheezing, chest tightness or breathlessness that continues after other cold symptoms settle can point to asthma or acute bronchitis. Anaemia, heart conditions and long-term lung disease can also cause breathlessness, so the symptom needs context rather than a single assumed cause. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency when breathing trouble follows a possible allergen, especially with swelling, hives or faintness.

Rest, drink fluids, avoid smoke and sit upright if that feels easier. Note whether the breathlessness occurs at rest, during ordinary activity, or only when your nose is blocked. If you use a prescribed reliever inhaler, follow your personal plan. Arrange a clinical assessment if symptoms are new, worsening, recurring, or accompanied by wheeze, chest discomfort, fever or unusual tiredness.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, inability to speak normally, or swelling of the face or throat. Seek same-day medical advice for breathlessness at rest, rapidly worsening symptoms, chest pain, faintness, or a fast or irregular heartbeat. Children, older adults and people with asthma, COPD or heart disease may need earlier assessment.

Ask what may be causing the breathlessness, whether your lungs and oxygen level need checking, and which symptoms should prompt urgent help. Mention when it began, what triggers it, your medicines, smoking exposure and any previous asthma or heart problems.
