What should you know about chin milia?

Milia are not the same as acne spots. They often feel like hard grains under smooth skin and may have no redness, tenderness or opening. They can appear after irritation, thick products or minor skin injury, although they may also arise without an obvious trigger. A cluster of bumps around the mouth can have another cause, so appearance alone cannot confirm milia.

Use a gentle cleanser, avoid picking, and choose non-greasy skincare while the area settles. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and remove an individual lesion with a sterile opening and extraction. Depending on the pattern, they may discuss topical retinoids or a procedure such as curettage and cautery. Do not pierce chin bumps at home; this can cause infection, scarring or dark marks.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if bumps persist, multiply, become inflamed, bleed, hurt, or do not look like typical firm white cysts. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus or fever, which can indicate infection rather than uncomplicated milia.

Ask whether the bumps are milia or another type of skin bump, whether any product may be contributing, and which removal method suits their depth and location.
