Chest view X-ray: what to know

The image can show the outlines of the lungs, heart, ribs, diaphragm, and areas between the lungs. Clinicians may use it when someone has cough, fever, breathlessness, or chest pain, or to follow a known problem. It can support assessment of pneumonia, chronic cough, bronchiectasis, or tuberculosis, but a normal-looking image does not explain every symptom and an abnormal area may need another test. The radiologist’s report is interpreted with your symptoms, examination, and previous images when available. A chest X-ray uses a small amount of ionising radiation; tell the team if you are pregnant or might be pregnant.

Usually, no special preparation is needed. Remove jewellery or clothing that could overlap the chest and follow the radiographer’s instructions. You may stand or sit against the equipment and hold your breath briefly while the image is taken. Keep still so the picture is clear. Ask when and how you will receive the report, who will explain it, and whether a follow-up appointment is needed. Do not assume that a referral for an X-ray confirms a particular diagnosis.

An X-ray appointment should not delay emergency care. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, coughing blood, sudden severe chest pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms. If you are waiting for imaging and your condition changes, contact the referring service or emergency services according to the seriousness of the change.

Ask what question the X-ray is intended to answer, whether you need more than one view, when results will be available, what happens after an unclear image, and which symptoms require urgent review.
