Cellulitis and pitting edema: what to know

Pitting edema is swelling that briefly forms a dip when gently pressed. With cellulitis, inflammation can make nearby tissues hold extra fluid, often alongside warmth, redness, and pain. Swelling in one area can also have causes unrelated to infection, so the indentation alone cannot confirm cellulitis.

Cellulitis is a deeper skin infection that commonly enters through a small break, crack, bite, wound, or fungal infection such as Athlete's Foot. Diabetes can make foot and leg skin problems more significant and may change how quickly you need review.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new, spreading, warm, painful swelling or an indentation that is worsening. A clinician may examine the skin, check circulation and sensation, and decide whether oral treatment or hospital care is appropriate.

Until assessed, keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or massaging it, rest the limb in a comfortable raised position, and mark the edge of redness with the time so spread is easier to notice. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course without advice.

Seek urgent help if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe or out of proportion, the skin turns dusky or purple, blisters appear, or you develop Fever, shaking, confusion, unusual drowsiness, faintness, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms can indicate a severe infection, including Sepsis, and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask what is causing the edema, whether you need treatment for Cellulitis, how to protect the skin while it heals, and which changes should trigger same-day review. Mention diabetes, circulation problems, recent wounds, insect bites, or Athlete's Foot.
