Cellulitis on the Buttock: What You Should Know

Cellulitis can begin when bacteria enter through a small cut, irritated hair follicle, insect bite, cracked skin, or another break that may be hard to see. The affected area may feel hot, tight, sore, or increasingly sensitive when sitting or walking. Redness often has an uneven edge and can expand beyond the first tender spot.

A boil, abscess, pressure injury, infected cyst, or inflamed follicle can look similar but may need different treatment. A clinician may examine the skin and check for a pocket of pus. Conditions such as Athlete's Foot can create breaks in the skin that allow bacteria to enter, while Type 2 Diabetes can make skin infections harder to manage.

Arrange a same-day medical assessment if the buttock is becoming red, warm, swollen, or painful, especially when the area is enlarging. Treatment may involve prescription antibiotics; take them exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Do not squeeze, lance, or massage the area, because this can irritate tissue and spread infection.

Keep the skin clean and dry, avoid friction and tight clothing, and cover any open area with a clean dressing. Marking the outer edge of redness with a pen can help you notice whether it is spreading. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain reliever is suitable for you.

Seek urgent medical help if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe or seems greater than the skin changes, or the skin develops blisters, dark discoloration, numbness, or a rapidly increasing swelling. Fever, chills, marked weakness, dizziness, confusion, fast breathing, or a racing heartbeat can signal a serious infection. Call emergency services if you feel faint, confused, or severely unwell.

Do not wait for a routine appointment when the infection is near the anus or genitals, follows surgery or an injection, or occurs alongside a weakened immune system or diabetes. These situations can require closer examination and treatment.

Ask whether the area looks like cellulitis or an abscess, whether a drainage procedure is needed, and how soon improvement should be expected after treatment. Mention any recent wound, injection, shaving irritation, skin condition, fever, antibiotic use, or history of diabetes. Confirm which symptoms mean you should return urgently and how to protect the skin while it heals.
