What should you know about celiac light sensitivity?

Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, means that light feels unusually uncomfortable or painful. It can occur with migraine, conjunctivitis, irritation of the eye or other conditions. Coeliac disease can involve nutritional and digestive problems, but light sensitivity should not automatically be attributed to it.

The pattern matters: note whether one or both eyes are affected, whether there is redness or discharge, whether headache or nausea occurs, and whether vision changes. These details help a clinician decide whether the problem is mainly ocular, migraine-related or needs urgent neurological assessment.

Reduce glare, use comfortable indoor lighting and wear ordinary sunglasses outdoors if they help, while arranging an assessment for persistent or recurring symptoms. Avoid rubbing the eyes and do not use someone else’s eye drops. Record the timing, triggers, headache symptoms, eye redness, discharge and any change in vision.

If you have known coeliac disease, continue its advised management but seek a separate review for light sensitivity. A clinician may examine the eyes, review medicines and ask about migraine or recent illness.

Get urgent medical help if light sensitivity starts suddenly with severe headache, fever, stiff neck, confusion, vomiting, a rash, fainting, weakness or difficulty speaking. Prompt eye care is also needed for significant eye pain, a red eye with reduced vision, injury, or sudden visual loss.
