What causes milia on the face?

Milia are small, firm, pale or white cysts containing keratin, a protein found in the outer skin layer. They commonly appear around the eyelids, cheeks, nose or forehead. Some arise without an obvious trigger; others follow a rash, sun damage, burn, abrasion or a procedure that disrupts the surface. They are not the same as acne, even though a facial milia bump can resemble a whitehead. The contents are enclosed under a thin layer of skin rather than sitting in an open pore.

Do not squeeze or pierce a facial milia, especially near the eye, because this can injure the skin and leave a mark. Use gentle cleansing and avoid heavy products that seem to worsen congestion. If the bumps persist or bother you, a clinician can confirm the diagnosis and remove them with a suitable office technique. Topical Retinoids may be considered for some patterns, while Curettage And Cautery can remove selected lesions; treatment choice depends on location and skin sensitivity.

Arrange an examination if a bump is painful, inflamed, bleeding, rapidly changing, or unlike your usual milia. Seek care for eye-area swelling or vision symptoms.
