What should you know about casein allergy test?

A clinician starts by asking what food was eaten, how much was consumed, how soon symptoms began, what symptoms occurred and whether the reaction happened again. Skin-prick testing or a blood test may look for immune sensitisation to milk proteins. These tests support a diagnosis but need to be interpreted alongside your history.

A supervised oral food challenge may sometimes be considered when the diagnosis remains unclear. It involves carefully measured exposure in a setting prepared to treat a reaction; never try to recreate a severe reaction at home. Casein allergy is different from lactose intolerance, which does not involve the same immune mechanism.

Keep a symptom and food diary, save ingredient labels and list all medicines, supplements and known allergies. Ask the testing clinic whether any medicine should be paused; do not stop prescribed treatment without clear instructions. Continue avoiding a suspected trigger if your clinician has advised this, especially after a rapid or severe reaction.

Testing is designed to answer a specific clinical question. Results may be negative, positive or inconclusive, and the next step could be continued avoidance, a supervised challenge or assessment for another explanation. Related allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis, asthma or allergic conjunctivitis may also be discussed if symptoms suggest them.

Do not wait for an appointment if exposure causes breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread hives, repeated vomiting or rapidly worsening symptoms. These may signal Anaphylaxis. Use prescribed emergency medicine according to your action plan and call emergency services immediately.
