Short answer

Pneumonia is an infection affecting the lungs that may cause cough, fever, chills, phlegm, chest discomfort, and breathlessness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding pneumonia

Pneumonia causes inflammation in parts of the lungs and can make it harder to move oxygen into the bloodstream. It may follow infection with bacteria, viruses, or other germs. Symptoms vary: some people mainly have cough and tiredness, while others develop fever, chills, chest pain, or breathlessness.

COVID-19 and Influenza can produce similar respiratory symptoms. A clinician uses the history and examination, and may arrange tests, to decide whether pneumonia is present and what treatment is suitable. The symptom pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Steps after assessment

Follow the treatment instructions, rest, drink fluids when able, and avoid smoking. Take prescribed medicines at the stated times and ask before adding over-the-counter products, especially if you have other health conditions. Keep track of breathing, alertness, fever, and how much you can drink.

Limit close contact while you have an active respiratory illness and use practical infection-control measures around others. Arrange follow-up if symptoms are not settling as expected, because recovery may take time and persistent breathing problems deserve review.

Warning signs

Call for urgent medical help if breathing becomes severely difficult, lips look blue or grey, you become confused or faint, or you cannot keep fluids down. Worsening chest pain, marked drowsiness, or rapidly deteriorating symptoms also need prompt assessment. Pneumonia can sometimes lead to Sepsis, so sudden overall decline should not be ignored.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what is causing the lung infection, whether a chest examination or test is needed, and how the treatment should be taken. Ask how to judge improvement, whether you need follow-up, and which breathing or general symptoms mean you should seek urgent care.

Questions people ask

Can pneumonia cause a cough with phlegm?

Yes. Coughing up phlegm can occur with pneumonia, but the symptom also has other possible causes and needs clinical context.

When should someone with pneumonia seek urgent help?

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to drink, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
