What should you know about brooder pneumonia?

A poultry brooder can contain dust, feathers, droppings, mould, and other airborne irritants. Repeated inhalation may inflame the lungs, while viruses or bacteria can cause an infectious pneumonia. Symptoms can include cough, fever, chills, tiredness, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or coughing up phlegm. Symptoms that begin or worsen during work around birds and ease away from that setting should be mentioned to a clinician.

The term does not identify one confirmed cause. A clinician may ask about bird contact, the timing of symptoms, smoking, medicines, allergies, and other exposures, then examine your breathing. Depending on the findings, assessment may include oxygen measurement, a chest image, or other tests. COVID-19 and influenza can also cause respiratory symptoms, so testing may be appropriate.

Arrange a medical review if you have a new cough, fever, breathlessness, chest pain, or phlegm after brooder exposure. Until you are assessed, reduce contact with the suspected airborne source, avoid smoke, and rest. Do not start leftover antibiotics or use someone else’s inhaler; treatment depends on whether the problem is infection, irritation, or an immune reaction. If a clinician prescribes medicine, follow the instructions and report worsening symptoms or troublesome effects.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or severe chest pain. Get prompt assessment if you cannot keep fluids down, are becoming unusually weak, or have a high fever that is worsening. A serious infection can sometimes progress to sepsis, which requires immediate treatment.

Ask whether your symptoms fit an infectious pneumonia or exposure-related lung inflammation, which tests are needed, and whether you should avoid the brooder temporarily. Tell the clinician when exposure happens, what protective equipment you use, and whether symptoms improve on days away from the birds.
