What should you know about breastfeeding and hair loss?

Short answer
Hair shedding after pregnancy can occur during breastfeeding as the hair cycle readjusts, but patchy loss, scalp symptoms, or ongoing thinning deserves medical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Diffuse shedding across the scalp rather than one smooth patch
- Gentle approach
- Loose hairstyles, mild handling, balanced meals, and clinician-guided supplements
Why shedding may happen
During pregnancy, hormonal changes can keep more hairs in the growing phase. After delivery, a larger group may shift into the shedding phase, making hair appear to come out in the shower or on a brush. This pattern is called Telogen Effluvium and is not caused by breastfeeding alone. Low iron, thyroid problems, nutritional strain, illness, stress, tight hairstyles, and inherited Female Pattern Hair Loss can also contribute. Smooth round patches, scale, broken hairs, or scalp inflammation suggest a different process.
Caring for your hair
Eat regular balanced meals, take only supplements recommended by your clinician, and handle wet hair gently. Avoid tight braids, extensions, harsh chemical treatments, and high heat while shedding is heavy. Photograph the parting and hairline periodically so gradual change is easier to describe. Do not start Finasteride Treatment while breastfeeding without specialist advice; medication choices depend on infant exposure and your medical circumstances.
When to seek care
Book a review if loss is patchy, rapidly worsening, associated with scalp pain, scale, redness, or sores, or continues without improvement after the postpartum period. Seek earlier advice for fatigue, dizziness, weight or temperature changes, or a restrictive diet, because these can point to treatable contributors. Sudden extensive loss needs prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern fits postpartum shedding, whether blood tests for iron or thyroid function are appropriate, how to protect your baby while choosing treatment, and whether conditions such as Alopecia Areata or traction alopecia need consideration.

Questions people ask
Does breastfeeding itself cause hair loss?
Breastfeeding often overlaps with postpartum shedding, but the main trigger is usually the hair-cycle change after pregnancy. Other causes should be considered when the pattern is unusual.
Is postpartum hair loss permanent?
Postpartum shedding often settles as the hair cycle normalises, but persistent thinning, patchy loss, or scalp changes should be assessed for another cause.
