What should you know about the bloody cough medical term?

Haemoptysis is a description of where blood appears, not the name of one disease. Irritated airways during acute bronchitis can produce streaks in phlegm. Asthma, chronic cough, or acid reflux may repeatedly irritate the throat and airways, while bronchiectasis can cause recurring mucus and bleeding. Allergic rhinitis or a common cold may instead cause blood from the nose or upper throat to be mixed with material that is later cleared. Bronchiolitis can affect young children with cough and breathing symptoms. A clinician needs the history and examination to identify the source.

Record whether the blood is bright or dark, streaked through mucus or separate, and whether it followed coughing, vomiting, nose irritation, or an injury. Note fever, chest pain, breathlessness, wheeze, and how long the cough has lasted. A clinician may examine your nose, throat, and chest, review medicines such as anticoagulants, and decide whether tests or imaging are appropriate. Do not smoke, and do not self-treat with antibiotics.

Emergency help is needed for a large amount of blood, breathing difficulty, chest pain, faintness, confusion, blue lips, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek prompt medical review for any unexplained episode, repeated blood-streaked mucus, or haemoptysis in someone taking blood thinners or living with a lung condition.

Ask whether the episode meets the definition of haemoptysis, where the blood is likely coming from, and which tests are needed. Share your smoking history, recent respiratory infections, reflux symptoms, nasal bleeding, previous lung problems, and current medicines.
