Blood cough from mouth: what to know

Small streaks can appear after forceful or repeated coughing has irritated the throat or bronchial tubes. Blood may also drain from a nosebleed or arise from bleeding gums, a mouth sore or a dental problem, then be noticed during coughing. Airway conditions such as Acute Bronchitis or Bronchiectasis can present with blood-stained mucus. Reflux, allergies and asthma can maintain a cough that irritates delicate lining. The colour, amount, mucus, chest symptoms and source of bleeding help a clinician narrow the cause; a blood-stained cough does not by itself identify one condition.

Stop smoking and avoid dusty or smoky air. Sit upright, spit the material into a tissue or container, and note whether it is mixed with mucus, comes after a nosebleed, or follows brushing your teeth. Do not start leftover antibiotics or use a cough suppressant to conceal worsening bleeding. Arrange medical advice promptly, especially if the episode returns, the cough continues, or you take blood-thinning medicine. A clinician may examine your mouth, nose and chest and decide whether further tests are needed.

Seek emergency help for heavy or repeated bleeding, trouble breathing, chest pain, faintness, blue lips, confusion, or blood that does not stop. Urgent assessment is also sensible when fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or worsening breathlessness accompanies the cough.
