Bleeding after an ectopic pregnancy

The amount and pattern can vary with the treatment you received. Bleeding should be considered alongside pain, dizziness, fever, discharge and your follow-up results rather than judged by colour alone.

Blood from the vagina usually comes from the womb lining responding to changing hormone levels; it does not show where the ectopic pregnancy was located or confirm that treatment is complete. Spotting, a flow resembling a period and small clots can occur during recovery.

After medicine or surgery, your care team may use blood tests to check that the pregnancy hormone continues to fall. A transvaginal ultrasound may also be used when symptoms or earlier findings need reassessment. Keep every planned follow-up even if bleeding and pain have settled.

Vaginal bleeding is different from bleeding inside the abdomen. Internal bleeding may cause worsening pelvic or abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, weakness, dizziness or collapse, sometimes without heavy vaginal blood loss.

Use sanitary pads so you can notice changes in the flow, and follow the bathing, sex, exercise, wound-care and medicine instructions given for your treatment. Do not take extra pain relief or restart medicines without checking that they are compatible with your recovery plan.

Record whether the bleeding is becoming lighter or heavier and note associated pain, temperature, dizziness or unusual discharge. Contact the treating team if the pattern concerns you, returns after settling or differs from what they told you to expect.

Physical recovery and grief do not always move at the same pace. Tell a clinician if distress, poor sleep or intrusive thoughts are making everyday activities difficult; emotional support is a valid part of ectopic pregnancy care.

Seek emergency help now for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, confusion, breathlessness, collapse, or bleeding that is rapidly soaking through pads. These signs can indicate significant blood loss or another urgent complication.

Contact your treating service promptly for fever, chills, worsening wound redness, foul-smelling discharge, increasing pain, persistent vomiting, or bleeding that becomes heavier instead of easing. If you cannot reach the service and symptoms are worsening, go to an emergency department.

Ask what bleeding pattern is expected after your specific treatment, when your next blood test is due, what result will show that follow-up can stop, and whom to contact outside clinic hours. If you had a salpingectomy, ask how to care for the incisions and which activities to avoid while they heal.

You may also want to discuss when to expect a menstrual period, contraception, when it is medically appropriate to try for another pregnancy, and whether an early scan is advised in a future pregnancy.
