What should you know about biologic injection for asthma?

The injection is designed for particular asthma patterns rather than every person with the condition. Before recommending it, a specialist reviews your symptoms, flare-ups, inhaler use, allergies and relevant tests. Some biologics are given in a clinic, while an appropriate patient may later receive doses outside the clinic with clear instructions. Observation after a dose may be advised because allergic reactions can occur.

A biologic works gradually by interrupting an immune pathway. It is not an immediate rescue medicine for sudden wheezing, cough or chest tightness, and it does not remove the need for an agreed action plan.

Before an appointment, note the date and severity of recent attacks, missed activities, night symptoms and any use of urgent care. Bring every inhaler or a current medication list. Tell the treating team about infections, vaccinations, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any past injection reaction. Follow the dosing schedule exactly and keep attending asthma reviews. Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, inability to speak in full sentences, confusion, blue or grey lips, or a reliever that is not easing a serious attack. Do not wait for the next biologic injection to treat an acute episode. After an injection, obtain urgent help for swelling of the face or throat, faintness, widespread hives or sudden breathing difficulty. Report milder but persistent reactions to the prescribing team.
