Hair can look different because of styling, lighting, length, wetness, camera angle or concealing fibres. Public images and online claims are therefore not a sound basis for medical conclusions. If the question comes from concern about your own hair, the pattern and timing of change are more useful than comparison with a celebrity.

Gradual thinning at the temples or crown is a typical presentation of male pattern hair loss. Female pattern hair loss more often presents with widening of the part or reduced density over the top of the scalp. Telogen effluvium presents with increased shedding across the scalp, sometimes after illness, major stress, dietary restriction or another bodily change.

Alopecia areata commonly presents with smooth, clearly defined patches. Traction alopecia appears where repeated pulling from tight styles stresses the hair. Scalp ringworm may present with broken hairs, scale, itch or tender areas. These patterns can overlap, so appearance alone may not settle the cause.

Note when the change began, whether it is shedding or thinning, which scalp areas are involved and whether there is itching, scale, pain or breakage. Photos taken under consistent light can help show progression. Review recent illnesses, weight changes, stress, hair practices, supplements and medicines with a clinician rather than stopping prescribed treatment yourself.

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Finasteride may be discussed for appropriate adults with pattern hair loss, but it has contraindications and possible adverse effects that require an individual conversation. Infection, inflammation, nutritional problems and traction need different approaches; copying a celebrity’s presumed treatment can delay the right care.

Seek timely medical assessment for sudden or rapidly increasing loss, smooth bald patches, scalp pain, pus, marked redness, heavy scale, broken hairs, eyebrow or eyelash loss, or signs of scarring such as shiny skin and disappearing follicle openings. A child with patchy loss and scalp scale should be assessed because a fungal infection can spread and generally needs prescription treatment.

Ask which diagnosis fits the distribution and timing, whether the scalp shows inflammation or scarring, and whether blood tests are relevant to your history. Discuss what realistic improvement would look like, how progress will be photographed, which side effects need attention and how long to try a treatment before reassessment.
