What should you know about bacterial pneumonia?

Pneumonia inflames the tiny air sacs where oxygen enters the blood. Bacterial infection may cause cough, fever, chills, chest discomfort, fast breathing, tiredness, and coughing up phlegm. Viral illnesses such as COVID-19 or Influenza can cause a similar pattern, so symptoms alone cannot identify the germ.

A clinician may listen to the chest, measure oxygen levels, and decide whether imaging or other tests are needed. Older adults and people with heart, lung, or immune conditions may become seriously unwell with less obvious symptoms.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if pneumonia is suspected. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed, rest, drink enough to avoid dehydration, and avoid smoking. Keep follow-up appointments because cough and energy can take time to recover even after infection improves.

Cover coughs, wash hands, ventilate shared spaces, and avoid close contact with vulnerable people while fever or frequent coughing continues. Do not use leftover antibiotics or assume a viral illness needs antibacterial medicine.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or chest pain that is severe or worsening. Seek urgent review for rapidly worsening fever, dehydration, coughing blood, or a new deterioration after initial improvement. Sepsis can develop from serious infection and requires immediate attention.
