How to Avoid Text Neck

Short answer
Reduce text neck strain by raising screens, supporting your arms, changing position often and taking regular movement breaks.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main strategy
- Raise the screen and vary your position frequently
- Helpful support
- Rest the forearms during longer screen tasks
- Professional option
- Physiotherapy or an ergonomic assessment for persistent problems
The short answer
There is no single perfect posture to hold all day. A comfortable, supported setup combined with frequent position changes usually matters more than forcing your shoulders or neck into a rigid pose.
What text neck means
Text neck describes neck and upper-back discomfort linked with prolonged looking down at a phone, tablet or laptop. Bending the head forward and holding the arms unsupported can fatigue muscles around the neck, shoulder blades and upper back. Symptoms may include aching, stiffness, headache or soreness between the shoulders, but these symptoms can have other causes.
Practical ways to reduce strain
Bring a phone closer to eye level instead of dropping your chin toward your chest. For longer tasks, use a stand or separate keyboard so the display can sit higher while your forearms remain supported. Keep frequently used items within easy reach, relax your grip and switch hands when practical.
Build movement into screen use: look away, gently turn the head, roll the shoulders and stand or walk before discomfort builds. If an exercise causes sharp pain, dizziness, tingling or increasing symptoms, stop it and seek individual advice. A physiotherapist can assess movement, strength and workstation habits when self-care is not enough.
When to seek medical care
Arrange an assessment if pain persists, keeps returning, limits normal activity or travels into an arm. Seek urgent care after a significant injury or if neck pain occurs with new arm or leg weakness, loss of coordination, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe headache, fever, confusion, fainting, chest pain or trouble breathing.
Questions for your clinician
Ask which movements appear to aggravate your symptoms, whether your arm symptoms suggest nerve irritation, and which exercises suit your examination findings. You can also bring photos of your usual desk and phone positions so the clinician can suggest specific adjustments.

Questions people ask
Can text neck be prevented without giving up phone use?
Yes. Holding the device higher, supporting the arms, shortening uninterrupted viewing and changing position regularly can reduce sustained strain while you continue using it.
Should I buy a posture brace for text neck?
A brace is not routinely needed for screen-related strain and may not address the habits causing symptoms. A clinician can advise whether temporary support is appropriate for your particular condition.
Is neck cracking a good way to relieve text neck?
Brief relief after cracking does not correct screen position or muscle endurance. Avoid forceful self-manipulation, especially if it produces pain, dizziness, numbness or weakness.
